BLOG MATRIX / VISAKHAPATNAM

SEO for Visakhapatnam businesses.
Including the part we cannot help with.

Every page like this one carries a line about local map listings not being available to a remote agency. This one explains what actually decides those listings, because it is the part of local search that matters most and gets explained least.

Discuss your Visakhapatnam business

How the map results are actually decided

First, how much they matter. In our research a map block appears on nearly three quarters of searches where somebody is choosing who to hire or buy from, and on about one in twenty-five where they are simply trying to understand something. So for a business selling locally, this is not a side feature. It is most of the commercial page.

Google describes three things as deciding what appears there: how relevant your listing is to what was typed, how far you are from the searcher, and how prominent your business is generally. Two of those you can work on. Distance you cannot, which is why a business on the wrong side of the city cannot buy its way into a search happening across town, and why no agency can either. What you influence is the listing itself: the primary category, which matters more than almost anything and is frequently set wrong, the services and attributes actually filled in, photographs that are yours, hours kept accurate, and questions answered. That is mostly an afternoon of work by somebody with access, not a monthly retainer.

Your competitors reviews are free content research

Here is something underused and free. Read the reviews of three or four competitors, including the poor ones, and write down what customers actually mention. Not what the businesses say about themselves, what buyers bothered to comment on.

It is usually a short and surprising list: response time, whether a quote was honoured, whether someone turned up when promised, how a problem was handled, parking, whether staff explained things. Those are the things deciding your market, and they are almost never what a website leads with. If several competitors are criticised for slow replies, then stating your actual response time on your own page is worth more than a paragraph about commitment to excellence. Reviews of your own business are useful the same way, particularly the complaints, which tell you what your pages are failing to set expectations about.

The duplicate pages you made without noticing

Most sites serve the same page at several addresses without anyone realising. With and without www, http as well as https, with and without a trailing slash, an index file that also resolves on its own, a printer-friendly variant, the same product reachable through two menu paths with different URLs.

It rarely breaks anything visibly, which is why it survives. What it does is split the credit: links and attention that should accumulate on one address are divided between several, and search engines pick which version to show, sometimes not the one you would choose. The fix is a settled decision about which address is canonical, redirects from the others, and a canonical tag declaring it. It is a one-off technical job rather than ongoing work, and on older sites it is often the single largest thing holding back pages that look fine otherwise. Our technical SEO page covers how we find them.

Being a long way from everywhere else

Visakhapatnam is several hundred kilometres from the nearest comparable city, which cuts both ways and is worth naming. There are fewer agencies nearby than a business in Hyderabad or Chennai would have to choose from, so working with someone remote is closer to normal here than unusual.

That is not automatically an argument for hiring us. It is an argument for judging a remote supplier on the same terms as a local one: whether they explain themselves clearly, meet dates, and hand over work you keep. Distance only matters for the parts that genuinely need presence, which in search is a short list: photographs of your premises, anything requiring physical verification, and the conversation where somebody extracts what you know. Those belong to you or a local supplier regardless of who does the rest.

Where to put the first effort

If you sell locally, the business profile, before anything on the website. It is the larger part of the commercial page, most of the work is a single session, and it does not require an agency. We would rather tell you that than bill for it.

After that the usual position applies: we work from Chandigarh, hold no Visakhapatnam address, have no keyword research covering this market, and do search only. Tell us what you sell and whether your customers are local or national, because the answer decides whether most of this page is relevant to you at all.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

A few practical details.

How are map results actually decided?

Relevance, distance and prominence, weighted differently by search. Distance is the part you cannot change, which is why a business outside a city cannot buy its way into that city’s map pack — ours included.

Is there anything useful in our competitors’ reviews?

A great deal. Reviews are unpaid research into the words customers use, what they worry about and what goes wrong. They are usually a better source of page structure than a keyword tool.

Could we have duplicate pages without knowing?

Easily. Filters, print versions, session parameters and an old staging site all create copies. It is one of the most common findings in a first technical review and among the cheapest to fix.

A USEFUL NEXT STEP
