Small Business SEO

A small budget does not need a smaller version of an enterprise plan. It needs a different order of work — the things that move the needle cheapest, done first, and the expensive things deferred until they are worth it.

Why sequencing matters more than budget

Most small business SEO fails for the same reason: the plan is a scaled-down agency retainer, so a third of a small budget goes on reporting and account management before any work happens. The alternative is not cheaper work, it is different ordering. Google Business Profile, indexation fixes, title tags and the three pages closest to converting cost very little and often produce more in month two than a content programme produces in month six. That sequencing argument is the whole page, and it does not apply to a business with a large budget — which is why it is not just the SEO page with lower numbers.

What Small Business SEO covers

The cheapest wins, first

Profile, indexation, titles and internal links before anything is written. This is usually a few weeks of work with the shortest payback of anything in SEO.

Three pages, not thirty

Depth on the handful of pages that actually convert, rather than thin coverage spread across everything you offer.

What to deliberately skip

Link building, large content programmes and most tooling can wait. We name what we are not doing and why, so you are not paying for a line item you cannot use yet.

Work you can take in-house

Review requests, profile posts and basic content updates handed over as a process, because paying an agency retainer to do them is poor value at this size.

An honest stop point

A defined end to the engagement rather than an indefinite retainer. Plenty of small businesses need three months of work and then maintenance.

Reporting that fits

Enquiries and calls, in a short monthly note. Not a 40-page dashboard export that costs more to produce than it is worth.

What you end up with

  • A prioritised fix list with the cheapest high-impact items at the top
  • Google Business Profile configured and a review process handed over
  • Your three highest-intent pages rewritten and internally linked
  • A written stop point, so the engagement ends when the work does

Frequently asked questions

What is affordable SEO, realistically?

Affordable means the scope matches the budget honestly, not that the hourly rate is low. Cheap SEO is usually cheap because it is automated link building or bulk AI content, both of which cost more to undo than they ever returned. A smaller honest scope beats a larger fake one.

What is the minimum I should spend on SEO?

There is no universal figure, but there is a useful test: if the monthly budget is less than the value of one new customer, the maths rarely works. We run that calculation with you before quoting, and sometimes the answer is that ads or local SEO fit better right now.

Do I have to sign a long contract?

No. We work in defined scopes with a stated end point rather than rolling twelve-month lock-ins. SEO does take months to compound, and we will say so plainly, but that is an argument for patience — not for a contract you cannot leave.

Can I do some of the SEO myself?

Yes, and at this size you probably should. Review requests, Google Business Profile posts and keeping your services and hours current are genuinely better done in-house. We hand those over as a process rather than billing a retainer for them.

Is local SEO enough for a small business?

For a lot of local trades and services, yes — the map pack drives more enquiries than the website, and it costs less to work on. If most of your customers are within driving distance, start with local SEO and add site-wide work later.
