Website Speed Optimisation

Speed work is measurement first. Without knowing what is actually slow on the devices your customers use, optimisation is guesswork that happens to make a lab score go up.

Why a good lab score is not a fast website

A synthetic test runs on a fast machine on a fast connection from one location. Your customers are on mid-range Android phones on mobile data, and their experience is what Google records as field data — which is what actually counts toward Core Web Vitals. The two regularly disagree. Optimising for the lab number produces a site that scores well and still feels slow to the people paying you, so this work starts from field data and treats the lab tool as a diagnostic rather than a target.

What Website Speed Optimisation covers

Field data first

Real-user Core Web Vitals from Search Console, not a one-off lab run — the number Google actually uses.

LCP

Finding the element that is genuinely the largest paint and why it waits — usually an unoptimised image, a font, or a request chain in front of it.

INP

Interaction delay traced to the specific script blocking the main thread, replacing the old FID metric.

CLS

Layout shifts from images without dimensions, injected banners and late-loading fonts. Percentage-based offsets on decorative elements are a common hidden cause.

Images and fonts

Modern formats, correct dimensions, sensible preloading — and cutting font weights nobody uses. Usually the largest single win.

Third-party scripts

Measuring what each tag actually costs. Chat widgets and tag managers are frequently the most expensive thing on the page.

What you end up with

  • Before-and-after Core Web Vitals from field data, not only lab scores
  • The specific element or script responsible for each metric, named
  • Implemented fixes with the measured effect of each
  • A short note on what will re-break it, so the gain is not lost in a month

Frequently asked questions

What are Core Web Vitals?

Three measures of real-user experience: LCP (how quickly the main content appears), INP (how quickly the page responds when tapped) and CLS (how much the layout jumps while loading). Google measures them from actual visits, not from a test you run.

Why does my PageSpeed score differ from Search Console?

PageSpeed Insights runs a simulated test on demand; Search Console reports what real visitors experienced over the past 28 days. The field data is what counts. A site can score 95 in the lab and still fail Core Web Vitals in the field, which is why we start from Search Console.

How much does speed optimisation cost?

It is scoped after a diagnostic, because the work varies enormously — sometimes it is a few hours of image and font work, sometimes the platform is the constraint. We quote the diagnostic first so you can decide whether the fix is worth it before committing to it.

Does site speed actually affect rankings?

It is a real but modest ranking signal, and it is mostly a tie-breaker between otherwise comparable pages. The stronger argument is commercial: on mobile connections, load time correlates directly with people leaving before the page renders, so the conversion gain usually outweighs the ranking one.

Can you speed up a WordPress site?

Usually, yes — and the biggest wins are typically images, unused plugins and the theme rather than a caching plugin. Where a page builder is the underlying constraint we say so, rather than stacking optimisation plugins on top of the problem.
